Parks & Open Space Land Conservation Awards Ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 6

Awards to be presented in person Oct. 6, 3 p.m., at Beech Shelter north of Boulder

Boulder County, Colo. - The Boulder County Commissioners and Parks & Open Space staff will present their annual Land Conservation Awards in person at the Beech Shelter located just north of Boulder on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 3-4:30 p.m.

The Land Conservation Awards honor individuals or groups for outstanding contributions made to the conservation, preservation, and protection of land-based environmental resources. Traditionally, Boulder County celebrates these awards each spring during Volunteer Week. The 2020 and 2021 events were postponed due to the pandemic.

What: 2020 & 2021 Parks & Open Space Land Conservation Awards
When: Wednesday, Oct. 6, 3-4:30 p.m.
Where: Beech Shelter, 3100 Neva Access Road, Boulder (map).

Carpooling and early arrival are recommended, as parking and seating will be limited. However, standing room will be available outside the shelter.

The commissioners will present the following awards:

  • Land Conservation Award

    • 2020: Paul Lev-Ary for the donation of land to expand the Anne U.
      White trailhead.
    • 2021: Margaret Geick and Jean Moore for the preservation of the Tucker property located in the Indian Peaks Environmental Conservation Area just west of Nederland.
  • Environmental Stewardship Award

    • 2020: Diane and Lowell Dodge for implementing an ecological enhancement plan on their 40-acre property.
    • 2021: Janet Chu for her many decades of increasing the knowledge and appreciation of butterflies and their integral role in ecosystem function.
  • Cultural & Historic Preservation Award

    • 2021: Indian Mountain Native American Veterans, under the guidance and leadership of Wesley Black Elk and Marty Chase Alone, for reestablishing the Inipi Ceremony (purification sweat lodge) on the Southdown Indian Mountain property.
  • Volunteer Awards

    • 2020: Rob Alexander for outstanding contribution as a member of the Extension Advisory Board, a volunteer for 4-H, and contributor to numerous Extension workshops and events; and
      Gedeon LaFarge for outstanding contribution as member of the Volunteer Ranger Corps and service as an Outdoor Challenge teen mentor.
    • 2021: Elizabeth Kellogg for countless hours of volunteer work for Boulder County Plant Ecology projects; and
      Anne Cure, for her long-time volunteer work for the Boulder County CSU Extension agriculture program.
