Boulder County, Colo. -- On Friday, June 4, 2021, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Mountain View Fire/Rescue and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group evacuated two female hikers, in two separate incidents, who tripped on objects in the trail, injuring their ankles.

The first incident occurred at approximately 11:11 am when the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a female hiker with a broken leg in the area of the Ethel Herald Trail near the creek. After arriving in the area, rescuers had to search for the accident scene, reaching the subject at approximately 11:35 on the Columbine Gulch section of the Walker Loop Trail.

The 35-year-old hiker from Brighton had tripped on a root in the trail and injured her ankle. Rescuers provided first aid and splinted her injury and she was then carried out to the Ethel Herald parking lot and was transported to a Boulder area hospital for treatment. The rescue took approximately two and one-half hours.

The Sheriff’s Office was then notified of another ankle injury at approximately 1:20 pm just as rescue agencies were leaving the first incident.

A female hiker on the Green Mountain West Ridge Trail was reported to have sustained an ankle injury from stumbling on a rock in the hiking trail and was located approximately one- and one-half miles from Flagstaff Road. The 34-year-old from Northglenn, CO was splinted and carried to the trailhead where she was transported to medical care by her family. This rescue took approximately one hour and twenty minutes.

Agencies assisting with these two rescue efforts included: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, American Medical Response, Boulder County Open Space, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Mountain View Fire/Rescue and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.
