Wildfire Recovery Ponderosa Pine Survival Counts

Application or Registration Deadline: 06/16/2023
Project Date: Sat, June 17, 2023 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Opportunity Type: One-Time Volunteer Opportunity
Department: Parks & Open Space
Category: Open Space, Environment, and Gardening
Location:

Heil Valley Ranch

Program Summary:

With the help of a dedicated and passionate community of volunteers, we planted 3, 598 Ponderosa Pine Seedlings at Heil Valley Ranch for Cal-wood Fire restoration in 2022! An accomplishment to be proud of to be sure! It is important to us to monitor these efforts by tracking the survival of these Ponderosa Pines. This effort will help to inform future planting efforts, and guide the adaptive management of this wildfire recovery area. Guided by a Boulder County Plant Ecologist, small teams of people will systematically walk through several planting zones and record a sample set of trees, alive and dead. This involves hiking off trail, in uneven terrain. Sturdy hiking shoes or boots, and long pants are required. Depending on the number of folks who sign up, we plan to cover 3 planting zones near the main trailhead, and may cover one planting zone a bit further in, which would include a 10 minute drive and a 25 minute hike to get to. Sign up today to learn more about Boulder County’s wildfire restoration and vegetation monitoring efforts!
