National Trails Day: Trail Work Event

Application or Registration Deadline: 06/02/2023
Project Date: Sat, June 3, 2023 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Opportunity Type: One-Time Volunteer Opportunity
Department: Parks & Open Space
Category: Open Space, Environment, and Gardening
Location:

Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain

Program Summary:

Celebrate National Trails Day with Boulder County Parks & Open Space. Let’s do some trail work together at Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain!

Our mission for the day is to reduce the amount of mud on the trail. Join us as we build raised turnpikes, close down unnecessary trail braiding, and quarry rocks. With your help, we hope to reduce the number of days trails are closed due to excessive mud.

Project Description:
We will be constructing raised turnpikes to mitigate standing water and mud on-trail. Volunteers will set pieces of 6×6 wood and secure them into the ground with rebar. We will work together to fill the turnpike with various materials that will allow water to drain down through the walking surface, instead of sitting on top. Participants should expect to sweat as we carry rocks, dig in the dirt, and wheelbarrow around fill material. A variety of additional tasks should be expected. All necessary personal protective equipment will be provided by Boulder County, but volunteers should prepare themselves by bringing the following:

• Water bottle with water
• Sturdy boots/shoes (no open-toed footwear)
• Pants, instead of shorts (recommended, but not required)
• Snacks
• Sunscreen
• Work gloves (if you have a special pair you like, otherwise we will provide)
• Backpack (for carrying food, extra layers/rain gear, etc.)

Lunch will be provided!
