Program Summary: | Limber pine is an ecologically valuable species that provides several ecosystem services including soil stabilization, snow retention, colonization following fire, food and habitat for wildlife, and high elevation biodiversity. Unfortunately, limber pine populations are at a vulnerable point, facing multiple threats including mountain pine beetle, dwarf mistletoe, and a non-native disease of white pines called white pine blister rust. All these agents can cause widespread tree mortality and, when found in combination, can be even more lethal such that the long-term sustainability of the species is threatened. Volunteers are needed to help conserve this species by directly seeding limber pine seeds at Caribou Ranch. Work will involve using hand tools to prepare planting sites and sow the seeds. |
