Exemption History
In November 2006, Colorado voters passed Referendum E – Property Tax Exemption for Veterans with a Disability. This amendment to the Colorado Constitution extends the existing property tax exemption for qualifying seniors to any U.S. military veteran who has 100% permanent service-connected disability.
Deadline
Applications must be submitted no later than July 1 to the Assessor’s Office to have the exemption apply to the tax bill you will receive the following year.
Qualification
The qualifying veteran must meet the criteria for a qualifying disability and have owned and occupied the home as his or her primary residence since January 1 of the year of application.
Surviving Spouse of a Veteran with a Disability
The exemption is extended to the surviving spouse of a qualifying veteran with a disability. Please see the application for eligibility requirements. The application must be submitted to the Assessors Office no later than July 1.
Gold Star Spouses
In 2022 the state legislature extended the exemption to surviving spouses of Gold Star Veterans. The applicant must have owned and occupied the home as his or her primary residence since January 1 of the year of application. Applications must be submitted to the Assessor’s Office no later than July 1.
