Suspect arrested on attempted second degree homicide charge

Boulder County, Colo. - On March 7, the Boulder County Communications Center received a call shortly after midnight from the 100 block of N. Jefferson Street in the Town of Nederland regarding an assault that took place.

The suspect, Francesco A. Castorani, date of birth 7/5/95, got into an argument with one person, when a bystander attempted to break up the argument, she was assaulted by the suspect. Several employees of the business, who attempted to intervene, were also assaulted. The most serious charge of attempted second degree homicide was charged after the suspect attempted to assault a victim with a large rock weighing between 20 and 30 pounds.

After this incident occurred, the suspect fled in a vehicle which was found at a residence, located in the Town of Nederland. Due to the serious nature of the crime and the suspect’s criminal history, law enforcement monitored him until he could be safely apprehended. He was taken into custody later the same day without incident.

Mr. Castorani is being held at the Boulder County Jail on the following charges:

  • Attempted 2nd Degree Homicide, Class 2 Felony
  • Criminal Attempt, Class 3 Felony
  • 2nd Degree Assault, Class 4 Felony
  • Menacing, Class 5 Felony
  • 3rd Degree Assault, Class 1 Misdemeanor
  • Harassment, Class 1 Misdemeanor
  • Disorderly Conduct, Petty Offense

Mr. Castorani’s bail was set at $100,000. His first court appearance will be on March 8.

The following agencies responded to the incident: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, American Medical Response (AMR), Nederland Police Department, and the Nederland Fire Protection District.

The associated Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case number is 22-940 and the Nederland Police Department Case number is 22-72.
