Sugarloaf Road Flood Recovery Project starts week of May 2

Travel delays can be expected on CO 119 and Sugarloaf Road

Boulder County, Colo. - Starting next week, Boulder County and its contractor, American Civil Constructors, will begin final repairs on the first half-mile of Sugarloaf Road just up from CO 119. After the flood of 2013, Boulder County installed temporary retaining walls that support this section of roadway. These retaining walls repairs will now be made permanent. In addition to building five new walls, the project will include drainage improvements and a complete resurfacing of the construction zone, which will include a new four-foot-wide shoulder in the uphill lane. Working hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the project is anticipated to last into October, weather permitting.

Travel Impacts

In order to build the retaining walls and to provide room for construction crews to safely operate, Sugarloaf Road will be reduced to one-lane for approximately the first half-mile up from CO 119. This lane closure will be in place 24-hours a day, seven days a week throughout most of the project. A temporary traffic signal will be installed to safely guide travelers through the construction zone. While the signal is in place temporarily, it is considered the same as any other permanent signal throughout the county. In addition to being extremely unsafe and potentially cause a crash, illegally running a red light could also result in a traffic ticket and a possible court summons. In addition, running the light will reset the timing, which will force a longer wait for those waiting patiently at the other end.

During weekday working hours only (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mon. Through Fri.), CO 119 will be reduced to one-lane between Sugarloaf and Magnolia roads. Flaggers will be used to guide travelers safely through this section. Delays on CO 119 could range up to 10-minutes, so please plan trips accordingly.

Cycling on Sugarloaf Road

Due to the steep incline in the construction zone and the use of the traffic signal, we encourage all cyclists to avoid this section of Sugarloaf Road during construction. Cycling in the uphill direction through the construction zone will be permitted to Sugarloaf Road residents only throughout the project. Sugarloaf residents who rely on cycling a primary mode of transportation should contact Boulder County Public Works (contact info below) to request a permit. Cycling in the downhill direction on Sugarloaf and in both directions on CO 119 will be open to cyclists at all times.
