Six month investigation into criminal enterprise concludes

Suspects charged with introduction and distribution of illegal narcotics within the Boulder County Jail

Boulder County, Colo. - The Boulder County Drug Task Force (BCDTF), along with staff members of the Boulder County Jail and a Boulder County Sheriff’s K9 team, completed a six-month long investigation into a criminal enterprise that was responsible for introducing and distributing illegal narcotics to inmates within the Boulder County Jail.

Four people were charged and arrested, one person has charges pending, on a total of 65 felony charges as a result of the investigation that identified individuals introducing narcotics into the jail through the mail, and inmates responsible for receiving and distributing narcotics throughout the jail.

The investigation began after jail staff received an anonymous tip that methamphetamine (meth) was being introduced into the jail via mail. Specifically, paper that was saturated in liquid meth was being sent to specific inmates. After the associated inmates were identified, several letters sent to those suspects tested positive for meth.

BCDTF, jail deputies, and a sheriff’s office K9 team began working together to identify and intercept any paper saturated in illegal narcotics. Law enforcement investigatory techniques, physical inspection of the mail entering the jail and routine sniffs of incoming mail by a K9 team were utilized in the investigation.

As a result of this investigation, a total of 109.82 grams of paper saturated with methamphetamine and 137.41 grams of photo saturated with ketamine were seized either coming into the jail or was found to be in the jail.
