Hello and welcome to the very first Public Works Resource Conservation Division Newsletter.
I’m so happy to be in your inbox.
This quarterly newsletter will keep you up- to-date with Resource Conservation Division (RCD) news and provide you with fun information and helpful resources.
- We’re in the midst of RCD Spring Clean Up Events for our mountain communities! These annual events provide an opportunity for residents to dispose of hard to recycle items. Beginning back in 2003 with a focus on landfill-banned materials (such as hazardous materials, tires, and appliances), over the years these events have expanded to include many more hard-to-recycle items, like electronics and mattresses.
- Pictured here is the set up for our Nederland clean up that took place in early June. This event is crucial to help the folks of Nederland divert items like mattresses, paint, oil, electronics, and bikes from the landfill. Having participated in this event myself, I can say that it was an incredible opportunity to see people coming together to protect their community from illegal dumping of toxic and hard to recycle materials.
For this newsletter, the material stream we’re focusing on is hazardous material. Hazardous materials include items like batteries, light bulbs, paints, and house cleaners.
The Hazardous Materials Management Facility (HMMF) is Boulder County owned and operated. It is located at 1901 63rd Street in Boulder. Drop off is FREE for residents of Boulder County, Broomfield County, and Town of Erie. Let me repeat that, drop off is FREE!
In 2022, the HMMF diverted over 1 million pounds of materials from the landfill (diversion includes recycle and reuse). Each item they receive has a different disposal pathway. You can see in the graphic below that they’ve come along way in the past decade.

The kids are home for summer break and sometimes you’ve just got to have some screen time. Just because it’s summer break doesn’t mean that it can’t be educational!
Crash Course Kids is a YouTube channel with a variety of science-themed videos. I’ve personally used these videos with 2nd-6th graders and they are engaging and fun.
Two of the Crash Course Kids videos I recommend are Weather vs. Climate and Climate Change. It’s empowering to have vocabulary and understanding of climate change at a young age!

Hot tip: put the subtitles on or put the playback speed to .75 as she talks quickly in some of the videos.
