Press Release – Statement from District Attorney Michael Dougherty Regarding Guilty Plea in Federal Case Connected to Pearl Street Mall Attack

Boulder County, Colo. - On June 1, 2025, Mohamed Sabry Soliman attacked participants in a weekly peaceful gathering on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall by throwing Molotov cocktails and using a makeshift flamethrower, causing mass‑casualty injuries. The horrific, antisemitic attack killed 82‑year‑old Karen Diamond and wounded many other people and a dog.

From the very first hours after the attack, there has been a strong partnership between federal, state, and local agencies. The District Attorney’s Office prosecuted the state charges, including the murder of Karen Diamond, the attempted murder of the other victims, and other related charges. The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the hate crime charges.

On May 6, 2026, the defendant pled guilty to all charges in the state case and received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 2,128 years.

Today, in the federal case, the defendant pled guilty to all the federal charges. In today’s court hearing, the defendant admitted that he acted because of the actual or perceived religion or national origin of the victims.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated, “Today’s guilty plea marks another important step toward justice for the victims, their families, and our community. I am very grateful for the strong partnership with federal, state, and local partners in response to this mass attack. When he committed this terror attack, he did so with the belief that they were members of the Jewish community. It was an act of terror that took the life of Karen Diamond, a beloved grandmother, mother, and wife, and inflicted profound physical and emotional injury on many others. As reflected by today’s guilty plea in the federal case, acts of violence based on hate or bias have no place in Boulder, in Colorado, or anywhere.”

The District Attorney’s Office extends its continued support to all victims and their families as they move forward in their healing.
