Incident on Flagstaff Road: Response and Road Closure

Gross Dam Rd. is open to Flagstaff & Lakeshore residents for emergency ingress and egress while the situation is active.

Boulder County, Colo. - At 10:26 A.M. today, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received a call from two individuals in the parking lot located in the 2100 block of Flagstaff Road. Deputies were dispatched to a report of a male with a gun in the parking lot, acting erratically, with one of the reporting parties hiding in the bathroom. They reported hearing what they believed was a single gunshot.

Sheriff’s Deputies, Boulder Police, and Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks Rangers promptly responded to the scene. They made contact with a sole male occupant of the vehicle, who was armed with a handgun. The subject’s vehicle was blocked using a “pinch” technique to prevent the vehicle from leaving, and containment of the incident was established.

City and County of Boulder SWAT members, including the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) with a co-responder component, were activated and responded to the scene. Negotiators established communication with the subject in an effort to negotiate a peaceful surrender.

Despite hours of negotiation and exhaustive efforts to resolve the situation peacefully, the subject tragically took his own life. The scene remains active pending additional investigation.

Additional supporting agencies included Longmont Police K-9 and Mountain View Fire Protection District.

Flagstaff Road is currently closed between the base of Flagstaff and the 2200 block. Alternate access is advised via Coal Creek Canyon (Hwy 72) to Gross Dam Road to reach Flagstaff Road above the incident. Gross Dam Road will only be accessible to local residents while Flagstaff Road is closed. Gross Dam Road will close again (due to repairs needed from a rockslide in March) once Flagstaff Road is reopened.

We appreciate the public’s cooperation and understanding during this ongoing situation. Further updates will be provided as they become available.

This incident will be documented under Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case report 24-02693.
