Climbing Fatality at Boulder Falls
Boulder County, Colo. -
On Friday, June 28th, 2019 at 6:25 p.m. the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a climber who had fallen in the area of Boulder Falls. The extent of injuries was unknown at the time.
The initial report was made by a party not on scene at the time of the incident. Once first responders arrived it took rescuers about 20 minutes to locate the fallen climber. The climber was located above Boulder Falls and was unconscious. Medical personnel immediately began administering first aid, however, due to extensive injuries these efforts were not successful and the climber was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit was assisted in the rescue by the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Sugarloaf Fire, and American Medical Response (AMR).
Due to the weather in the area and the onset of darkness recovery efforts have been suspended until the morning of June 29th. The Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group will be assisted by the Boulder Emergency Squad and the Alpine Rescue Team out of Jefferson County when they resume the recovery operation.
The death investigation is being conducted by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and the Boulder County Coroner’s Office. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
