Boulder County, Colo. - Chip sealing operations, which started in mid-July, will continue through the month of August on the following northern Boulder County roads:

• North 75th Street from CO 66 to Woodland Road
• North 53rd Street from CO 66 to the end of the pavement
• Blue Mountain Road from US 36 to the Larimer County line
• Apple Valley Road
• Old South St. Vrain Road

Normal working hours are 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, but work can take place on Fridays to help keep the project on schedule.

Chip sealing applies liquid asphalt to a road surface that is followed by a layer of rock chips that create a new surface on the top of the road. Soon after the chips are laid down, crews return to the road to apply a sealant designed to help the chips better stick to the road. The sealant work is followed later by striping operations. Temporary tabs are applied to the road prior to crews restriping the surface.

All travelers are encouraged to avoid a road on the days it is receiving chip sealing work because of delays and the possibility of roadway sealant sticking to be bottom of vehicles. If you do travel a freshly chip sealed road, please drive slowly as to not kick up rocks and sealing material.

Chip sealing is party of the county’s primary network roadway rehabilitation plan. The process is intended to extend the lifespan of the roadway and postpone the need for costlier and more impactful reconstruction work.
