Key Points:

  • Funding provides leverage to other local, state, and federal wildfire mitigation grants.
  • Applications for the Spring 2025 cycle will be accepted through June 6. View grant eligibility and application information.

Boulder County, Colo. – Boulder County has released the application for the next round of Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grants (SFMG). Project funding is available for local government agencies, fire protection districts, and community organizations to increase the pace and scale of wildfire mitigation across the county.

The SFMG program is funded by the county’s wildfire mitigation sales and use tax.

Now beginning its third year, the county’s SFMG program has supported partners to identify and fund treatment on more than 1,900 acres of land. To date, 680 acres have been completed, with more work getting underway as the weather improves.

Past Project Example

The Dry Gulch South Fuels Reduction Project brought together partner agencies to successfully mitigate over 70 acres of forest west of Boulder, providing greater wildfire protection to nearby neighborhoods and families. The Sunshine Fire Protection District collaborated with the Four Mile, Sugarloaf, and Gold Hill Fire Protection Districts, as well as the Colorado State Forest Service, to reduce fuels in a densely forested area between the edge of the 2010 Fourmile Canyon Fire and the city of Boulder.

This area, identified as high risk on the BOCO Fireshed Priority Focus Area Map, plays a key role in protecting homes within the project site and adds a critical link to ongoing wildfire mitigation work in the area. The project helps safeguard the South Pine Brook Hills community and the western edge of Boulder, reflecting a shared commitment to keeping residents and landscapes safer from the growing threat of wildfires.
