Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Adds Online Reporting Option for Minor Traffic Accidents

Boulder County, Colo. - The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is expanding its online reporting system to include minor, non‑injury traffic accidents, giving community members a faster and more convenient way to file accident reports that do not require an in‑person law enforcement response.

The new feature has been added to the Sheriff’s Office’s existing online reporting platform at BoulderSheriff.gov, where residents can already submit reports for non‑emergency incidents such as theft, fraud, lost property, and criminal mischief. Adding minor accident reporting is intended to reduce call volume to the Boulder County Communications Center and free deputies to respond to higher‑priority incidents.

The new reporting option also allows the Sheriff’s Office to activate an “Accident Alert” during severe weather or high‑volume traffic conditions. When Accident Alert is in effect, drivers involved in qualifying minor accidents will be directed to file their reports online rather than wait for a deputy response.

Online Reporting Eligibility Requirements

Residents may use the online system to report minor traffic accidents only if the crash meets all of the following criteria:

  • The accident occurred within the Town of Lyons, Town of Nederland, Town of Superior, or on private property in unincorporated Boulder County (such as residential driveways or commercial parking lots), and the reporting party needs a report for insurance purposes.
  • No fatality or injury requiring medical attention occurred.
  • The accident is not a hit‑and‑run, or it is a hit‑and‑run with no information available about the other driver.
  • The accident does not involve damage to public property, except wildlife.
  • No drivers are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Or if the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is on Accident Alert.

All online submissions are reviewed by Sheriff’s Office personnel. While most cases will not require follow‑up, an investigator may contact the reporting party if additional information is needed.

When You Must Contact the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office

To avoid confusion, the Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that online reporting is not available for accidents on public roadways, except during Accident Alert.

Residents must contact 303‑441‑4444, or 911 in emergencies, if:

  • The accident occurred on a public roadway in unincorporated Boulder County, Lyons, Nederland, or Superior.
  • Anyone is injured or may need medical attention.
  • Impairment is suspected.
  • The crash involves active hazards (e.g. blocked lanes, leaking fluids, disabled vehicles in traffic).
  • The crash involves damage to public property (e.g. signs, guardrails, light poles).

These situations require a deputy response and cannot be reported online.
