Backpacker has a medical problem near Beaver Reservoir

Boulder County, Colo. - On Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a hiker who lost consciousness and needed medical assistance.

A 20-year-old male was leading a group of teenagers on an overnight backpacking trip from a local summer camp when he collapsed. The group was well prepared with a satellite phone and while gaining signal happened upon a Forest Service employee who was able to radio for rescue efforts. Indian Peaks Fire Protection District were first on scene and used their UTV, rescue units, and backpacking members to litter carry the patient to the waiting ambulance. The 20-year-old male from Tennessee was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for medical treatment. The rescue took approximately one and a half hours.

Agencies assisting with the rescue included: American Medical Response, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Indian Peaks Fire Protection District, and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.
