Arrest Made Following Road‑Rage Incident Involving Firearm Threat and Vehicle Pursuit
Boulder County, Colo. - On June 6, 2026, at approximately 8:12 p.m., the Boulder County Communications Center received a 911 call from a female reporting that she and her husband were being followed by a male armed with a gun near N. 95th Street and Oxford Road in unincorporated Boulder County.
The caller stated that she and her husband had been traveling northbound on Highway 287 when a sedan began tailgating them. They reported that while stopped at the traffic light at Lookout Road, the driver of the sedan pulled alongside their vehicle, began yelling, and brandished what appeared to be a handgun. Fearing for their safety, they attempted to drive away when the traffic light turned green.
According to statements provided to detectives, the sedan continued aggressive driving behavior, repeatedly pulling alongside their vehicle. The woman reported hearing what she believed to be gunshots coming from the suspect vehicle. Believing they were being fired upon, the man discharged his handgun three to four times toward the suspect vehicle in an attempt to defend himself and his wife.
The suspect vehicle continued to follow them northbound on N. 95th Street. While attempting to flee, they turned west onto Oxford Road and then north again on N. 95th Street. A short time later, they observed the suspect vehicle veer away from the roadway. They pulled over and awaited law‑enforcement contact.
At approximately 8:15 p.m., Longmont Public Safety officers responded to a single‑vehicle crash near N. 95th Street and Pintail Drive. Officers contacted the driver, identified as Luis Herrera Cruz (D.O.B. 11/02/1994). Cruz had sustained a head injury consistent with a grazing wound and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he received medical treatment.
A subsequent investigation determined that Cruz had been in possession of an airsoft handgun resembling a real firearm. The airsoft gun was recovered from his vehicle. Cruz admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the incident and exhibited signs of intoxication. Cruz’s vehicle contained multiple bullet holes, including one through the windshield.
Following the initial investigation, Luis Herrera Cruz was arrested and booked on the following charges:
- Felony Menacing (F5)
- Reckless Endangerment (M2)
- Reckless Driving (M2)
- Driving Under the Influence (M2)
This incident remains under active investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office at bcsotips@bouldercounty.gov.
