A call of a potential weapon near Lyons High School

Boulder County, Colo. - On March 2, 2023, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a call involving a potential weapon near Lyons High School. A reporting party saw a male walking in the open space near the school and looked to have a rifle. Lyons High School was placed on secure status. An open field search and drone deployment was conducted, and nothing was found. Later, a juvenile male and his mother contacted a deputy on scene, as they believed they were responsible for the police response. It was later determined the juvenile was playing a "war-style" game with a BB gun on their private property and came onto open space property for a short period of time before returning to their property. The male and his mother were apologetic and took full responsibility for the situation. This case remains open pending further investigation. Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Longmont Police Department, and St. Vrain Valley School District personnel responded to the incident. A small number of students were in the school during the incident for after school activities.

At this time, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office does not believe there is a threat to the public.
