Medicare Savings Program

The Medicare Savings Program (MSP) includes three different areas, each of which assists with health care costs for eligible Medicare Part A patients.

Program Details and Eligibility

Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB)

  • Pays for monthly Medicare premiums, deductibles and coinsurance
  • Eligibility begins the month after application is approved
  • Must currently be eligible for Medicare A
  • Prescriptions are covered under Medicare D
  • Income limits: $1,001 for individual and $1,348 for couple
  • Resource limit is $8,780 for an individual and $13,930 for a couple

  • Pays Medicare Part B premium
  • Must be currently eligible for Medicare Part A
  • Income limit is $1,197 for an individual and $1,613 for couple

Could I be eligible for the Medicare Savings Program?

If you are on Medicare Part A you may be eligible for one of the programs that help pay for your Medicare Part B premium. If you are eligible for SSI and are entitled to Medicare, you may be eligible for payment of your Medicare Part A premium, Medicare Part B premium, and any Medicare coinsurance and deductibles. You can be eligible with monthly income up to $1,277 for an individual or $1,723 for a couple. Your assets will need to below $8,440 for an individual and $13,410 for a couple.

How can I get help filling out an application for MSP?

You can contact the Boulder County Department of Housing and Human Services at 303-441-1000. Or, if you would like to come into the office, we have two locations. In Boulder, the office is located at 3460 N Broadway St Boulder CO 80304 and the Longmont location is at 529 Coffman Street Longmont CO 80501.

What is the minimum benefit that the Medicare Savings Program provides?

MSP will pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium for eligible seniors. Extra coverage may be available to those with lower incomes.
