Weekly Animal-Borne Disease Reporting

The Boulder County Public Health Vector Control Program aims to prevent the spread of disease from vectors (animals) to humans.

Week 24: June 14-20, 2026

Rabies

  • To date, 24 samples have been submitted for rabies testing. One bat tested positive.
  • Statewide, 14 animals have tested positive for rabies: Bat (9), Skunk (5).
  • In 2025, seven bats tested positive in Boulder County.

Mosquitoes

  • Both total mosquito and Culex (WNV carriers) were below the five-year average for the week.
  • Three sample pools were submitted for WNV/SLE testing. All samples were negative.
  • In 2026, all trapped mosquitoes will be tested for both West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis Encephalitis (SLE).

Plague/Tularemia/Hantavirus

  • No specimens were submitted for plague, tularemia or hantavirus.
  • Larimer County reported that a rabbit tested positive for tularemia on June 9th.
