Enteric Illness Data
Enteric illnesses are infections of the intestines caused by germs, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Some of these illnesses are serious enough to require reporting. These include:
- Campylobacteriosis
- Giardiasis
- Salmonellosis
- Shigellosis
- STEC (Shiga toxin-producing E. coli)
We track these illnesses locally to keep healthcare centers and the public informed about their frequency in the area.
When a Boulder County resident visits a medical provider with stomach issues like watery or bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, bloating, or on-and-off constipation or diarrhea, they may be tested for these illnesses. If the test is positive, it gets reported.
The charts below use data from the Colorado Electronic Reportable Disease Reporting System (CEDRS).
Preventing Enteric Illnesses
To prevent these types of illnesses, you should:

- Wash fruits and vegetables before eating them.
