Substance Use & Athletic Performance

Substance use is still too high among Colorado youth. Youth athletic coaches are in a unique position to positively influence their athletes, especially related to their decision to avoid substance use. Young people look to coaches as a role model and parental figure outside the home.

Learning Objectives

This training module is designed specifically for coaches to understand the impacts of substance use and steps they can take to support youth they coach.

  • Understand how tobacco, vaping, marijuana, alcohol, and prescription drugs are used by youth
  • Understand how tobacco, vaping, marijuana, alcohol, and prescription drugs impact athletic performance
  • Learn tips for talking to youth about substance use
  • Understand how substance use policies can impact athletic participation
