Join volunteer naturalists and astronomers from the Longmont Astronomical Society for a series of summer night astronomy programs. Together we'll learn about the night skies and view the celestial bodies residing in our galaxy and beyond. Summer is a great time to view the Milky Way, our home galaxy. Where is our solar system in the galaxy? Why do the planets and moon not follow the same path as the stars we see as the Milky Way? Bring a chair or blanket, a light jacket, and a red flashlight, and get ready to enjoy a night out with the family. The presentation is at the picnic shelter. Children ages 3-6 will love to visit the farm to learn about animals, plants, and agricultural life. Colorful Quilts shows kids how quilts contain family stories and then they get to design their own! All programs include a short story time, hands-on activities, and a take-home craft. Afterwards, explore the farm. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Fun on the Farm is the 2nd and 4th Fridays through September. The story of Glacial Lake Devlin and evidence of its catastrophic demise is a fascinating and little-known chapter in the geologic history of Caribou Ranch. Join volunteer naturalists on this 4.5-mile moderate hike to learn about the evidence firsthand. We will also learn about some of the oldest rocks in the area and the valuable minerals that formed and were mined nearby. They also provide habitats for endangered animals. These animals include black-footed ferrets, burrowing owls, and ferruginous hawks. Parks & Open Space Advisory Committee (POSAC) members and attendees will see and talk about fire recovery efforts on Parks and Open Space lands after larger wildfires. Several forestry and local experts will speak about what was done at Heil Valley Ranch after the Cal-Wood Fire, as well as how to prioritize areas for reforestation. The group will visit different sites at Heil Valley Ranch in vans. Attendees will meet at the Corral Trailhead parking lot at 3 p.m. Space is limited.
