Boulder County Adult Protection Services (APS) helps protect at-risk adults. We look into reports of abuse, neglect, or self-neglect. We also help connect people to services that can improve their health and safety.
Who is an at-risk adult?
An at-risk adult is someone age 18 or older who cannot meet their basic needs for health, safety, or well-being — or find the help they need on their own.
An at-risk adult is also someone who cannot make safe or informed decisions.
APS Investigates:
- Physical or sexual abuse
- Neglect by a caregiver
- Financial exploitation
- Self-neglect (when someone can’t or doesn’t take care of their basic needs)
- Other harmful acts
What We Do
When someone is an at-risk adult and being mistreated, we work with them to see what help they want and need. If desired, we can connect them to services to help them be safe. With permission, we work with health care providers, family members, community programs, and other supports when it’s safe and appropriate.
We also respect every adult’s right to make their own choices about how they live and what sort of help they want. We always keep information private. We provide only the level of help that the person wants and needs.
Who Should Report Mistreatment?
Mandatory reporters are a class of professionals who are required by law to report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of at-risk adults. Mandated reporters must call the police or APS where the adult lives.
Anyone who has concerns about an at-risk adult who might be unsafe or being mistreated is encouraged to make a report. You can call APS or your local police department to make a report.
How to Make a Report
To report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of an at-risk adult, call 303-441-1309. APS screeners are available 24/7 to take your call. APS will not tell the at-risk adult that it was you that called.
APS is not an emergency service. If someone needs help right now, call 911.
