Thanks to all of you who completed our survey about changing our program's name to LGBTQ+. The results indicate that 65% of those who answered the survey do think that the AAA should add the Q+ to our acronym, while 29% felt that we should leave it as LGBT, with 6% as unsure. Overall, individuals expressed a desire to add the Q to be more inclusive, and the + to add those others who are not included in LGBTQ, like Intersex, Asexual or Ally, in addition to those we might add in the future. We recognize that some do not embrace the Q, as the term Queer has painful or traumatic memories and history for many of our older adults. At the same time, numerous others are taking the power back and embracing the term Queer as an all-encompassing umbrella term. We will respond to the community feedback and adjust our name accordingly to add the Q+. Thanks again for your input!

Out Boulder County presented the annual Community Foundation's Open Door Fund fundraiser on April 20 at the St. Julien Hotel in Boulder. The black tie event is held to bring together the LGBTQ+ community and their allies to raise funds for the Open Door Fund. The evening kicked-off with a reception where attendees could mingle and show off their fabulous apparel. The program consisted of an excellent dinner and drinks, videos of Open Door Fund grantees, awards given to Seagate Technology and First Gentleman Marlon Reis, a comedy performance by Paula Poundstone, and an after-party of dancing to the music of DJ Tatiana. LGBTQ+ Support Group for Caregivers caring for those with Alzheimer's or Dementia
The AAA is looking to partner with our local Alzheimer’s Association chapter to offer a caregiving support group to the LGBTQ+ community. This support group would be for those who are caregivers—whether in their home, long distance, or for a loved one in a long-term care community—who identify as LGBTQ+, are caring for someone who identifies as LGBTQ+, or allies of the community. Caregiving support groups are a meaningful way to connect with other people who have similar experiences and struggles, and enable those who are “in the trenches” of caregiving to share stories and ideas with one another. Oftentimes those in the LGBTQ+ community face different obstacles, and we are hoping to build a community of folks who can share and understand together. Boulder County AAA and
Aging Advisory Council
Visit the State Capitol
Lindsay Parsons (Policy Advocate & Planner), Carol Cross (Contracts & Compliance Coordinator), Michael Chifalo (LGBT Program Specialist), and Dale Porter (Aging Advisory Council Co-Chair) visited with staff for Senator Foote and Representative Singer to share information on available resources through the Boulder County AAA. The group discussed the increasing older adult population in Boulder County and that additional funds will ultimately be necessary to serve the increasing population. Both staffers were interested in our work with Boulder County’s older adult LGBTQ+ population, affordable housing, and bill positions we have taken through the legislative session. This meeting lays the foundation for future work with these legislators – the AAA is a resource to their constituents seeking assistance and a resource to elected officials as they make decisions on legislation and future funding that impacts older adults.
