Boulder County, Colo. - At about 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, the Boulder County Communications Center received a report of an ATV accident near Miller Rock, in unincorporated Boulder County, northwest of Jamestown.
The ATV was being towed because of mechanical issues when it high-sided, causing it to roll onto a 52-year-old male rider. The second rider, who was uninjured, located cell service and called 911 before returning to assist his injured companion.
A Med Evac air ambulance landed near the patient, and ground crews helped move him to the helicopter. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit emphasizes the importance of proper vehicle maintenance and safety checks before entering the backcountry. Required ATV equipment includes functional brakes, a proper muffler, one working headlight, one red taillight and motor vehicle liability insurance. Safety gear requirements include helmets for riders and passengers under 18, eye protection and seatbelts when the vehicle is equipped with them. Off‑highway vehicle operators in Colorado must have current registration through Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Recreationists are also reminded that cell service may be limited or unavailable in remote areas. Carrying a satellite SOS device or other emergency communication tools is recommended. Texting 911 may also work when a voice call does not.
Agencies assisting with the rescue included the Allenspark Fire Protection District, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Estes Ambulance, Lefthand Fire Protection District, Med Evac, and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.
