Sheriff’s Office Investigating Fatal Bicycle Crash Near Gold Hill

Boulder County, Colo. - The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal bicycle crash that occurred early Saturday morning near Gold Hill.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that a man had gone off the roadway in the 3000 block of Gold Run Road, just south of Gold Hill. The caller reported the man was initially unconscious but breathing.

Fire personnel arrived on scene and immediately began lifesaving efforts. Despite those efforts, the 25-year-old man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is the primary investigating agency.

The initial investigation revealed that five friends had gathered earlier in the evening at the Gold Hill Inn before leaving together. Two members of the group departed on bicycles while the remaining three traveled in a vehicle, all heading south on Gold Run Road from Gold Hill. At one point, the vehicle passed the two bicyclists. A short time later, the lead bicyclist realized the 25-year-old man was no longer riding behind him. After retracing his route, he observed a bicycle light approximately 50 feet down an embankment adjacent to the roadway in the 3000 block of Gold Run Road. He made his way down the embankment to locate his friend and was soon joined by the occupants of the vehicle. The group immediately notified first responders and remained at the scene until emergency personnel arrived.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office is conducting an independent investigation to determine the cause and manner of death. The decedent’s name will be released following positive identification and notification of next of kin.

Gold Run Road was closed shortly after 1:00 a.m. to allow investigators to process the scene and reopened at approximately 8:00 a.m.

The investigation remains ongoing by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau.

Agencies that responded to the incident included the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Boulder Emergency Squad, Colorado State Patrol, American Medical Response, and the Gold Hill, Fourmile, and Sunshine Fire Protection Districts.

This incident is being investigated under Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case number 26-03487.
