Press Release – Happy Pride Month

Boulder County, Colo. - June marks the global celebration of Pride Month, a time dedicated not only to festivals and community events but also to honoring the hard‑won rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. The freedoms and protections many enjoy today were achieved through decades of determination, courage, and advocacy by the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. From the pivotal Stonewall uprising in 1969 to progress in marriage equality and anti‑discrimination laws, Pride Month stands as a reminder of both how far we’ve come and the urgent work that remains.

Despite meaningful steps forward, full equality has yet to be realized. Homosexuality remains illegal in 65 countries, LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face discrimination, and transgender people are too often denied basic dignity and respect. LGBTQ+ youth continue to experience bullying at disproportionate rates, and those aged 13–24 are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide compared to their peers. These realities underscore the ongoing need for visibility, advocacy, and support.

Representation matters. Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ visibility, from within the community and from allies, reduces prejudice and increases acceptance.

In 2024, the District Attorney’s Office’s Bias and Hate Crimes Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) was recognized with an Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo).

Upon taking office, with the support and guidance of Rocky Mountain Equality, District Attorney Michael Dougherty initiated the Bias and Hate Crimes Initiative, which included law enforcement training, community engagement, and a hotline for reporting incidents. Recognizing the need for further action, the Bias and Hate Crimes MDT was established, bringing together the DA’s Office, law enforcement, and community members to address bias-motivated incidents in Boulder County. The MDT enables a collaborative response to incidents, improves case investigations, supports victims, and analyzes trends to develop training and outreach.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated, “Our office remains committed to ensuring that every member of our community is treated equally under the law. We stand firmly in support of the LGBTQ+ community and encourage everyone to take part in celebrating Pride Month while working toward greater equality, safety, and belonging for all. May this June be filled with love, joy, and solidarity.”
