Construction Begins Oct. 6 on new Prairie Run open space park
Construction activity will be visible from N. 109th and N. 119th streets in southeast Boulder County.
Boulder County, Colo. - Parks & Open Space will begin construction on the highly anticipated Prairie Run open space park located in southeast Boulder County. Phase I construction begins Oct. 6 and will implement the plan in the southwest section of the planning area. Construction will be completed by April 30, 2026, with the goal to open some of the area in May or June.
This 1,377-acre site contains a dozen ponds and five miles of perennial stream along Boulder Creek and Coal Creek.
The Town of Erie lies just to the south, Niwot several miles to the northwest, and Longmont about five miles to the north. The site is bordered by County Line Road to the east, State Highway 52 on the north, US 287 generally on the west, and Jasper and Kenosha Roads on the south.
Phase 1 will develop the southwest area and will include a new trail and trailhead with the following features:
Sun Stride Trail
- A soft-surface trail, approximately 2 miles long.
- Access point to the Boulder Creek.
- Connections to the Town of Erie and future connections to the Boulder to Erie Regional Trail (BERT).
- A flashing crosswalk at 119th Street between Kenosha Road and Jasper Road.
- A shade structure.
- Multiple benches along the trail.
Kingbird Crossing Trailhead
- Located on N. 109th Street just north of Jasper Road.
- 30 parking spots including 2 ADA spots.
- Accessible restroom.
- An electric access gate that will open and shut each day to prevent parking after hours.
