Program Summary:

The Jail Education and Transitions (JET) Team is a jail-based program that is part of Boulder County’s Community Justice Services (CJS) division. JET works with incarcerated individuals who self-refer and meet the program’s eligibility requirements. The JET program is a therapeutic community in the jail that serves adults 18 years and older. We consider the individualized treatment needs of the client. Clients are assigned to classes based on individualized services plans to address their specific criminogenic, mental health and substance use treatment needs.

The program provides:

  • Group counseling
  • Individual therapy
  • Independent study
  • Education and tutoring support
  • Re-Entry and Case Planning Support for up to one year following release
  • Evidence-based classes

We seek a mature male with men’s group facilitation, therapy or counseling experience to moderate a men’s group for select clients in the JET program in the jail.

Currently, the typical length of stay is 4-6 months for JET male clients. We hope to find a volunteer who can meet weekly for at least 4 months with a select group of men (8-12) who are interested in a men’s group, and then repeat that with a new group after the first group has ended.

Help men work through recovery, deal better with pressure from society, and help them be more introspective while building rapport among the group. Encourage them to embrace healthy masculinity and the power of vulnerability in connection with other men.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Meet with a group of 8-12 selected clients for the duration of the group – 4 months. Facilitate discussion. Bring your experience working with groups, counseling or therapy for men.

Some topics to consider:

Helping men appreciate and heal from or transcend the causes of dysfunctional or painful relationships. Challenge limiting beliefs that may not serve them anymore. Co-create an atmosphere of trust, and honest, compassionate relationship building. Help them uncover their true value to society and their families/communities. Moderate discussion about acceptance, love, true intimacy and strength internally and with others.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Must be at least 21 years old. Therapy or counseling experience is required. Experience conducting men’s groups is ideal. Having worked with a diverse group of people will be helpful.

Comfortable in a jail setting. Volunteer will be escorted by a deputy to the classroom, left alone to conduct the group session, and escorted out of the restricted area by a deputy at the end of each class.

An Onboarding orientation at the jail is required and happens on the first Thursday of each month from 1:00PM-3:00PM, conducted by jail staff.

Background check and fingerprinting required.

Lived experience can be a powerful tool. Each applicant will be vetted on a case-by-case basis. No one can be considered who has had charges of domestic violence or child abuse/neglect per Colorado statutes.

Training Dates and Information:

Orientation to the JET program will be individualized after acceptance of the position.
