Study Recommendations
The US 287 Vision Zero Safety & Mobility Study outlines a series of key recommendations aimed at improving safety and mobility along the US 287 corridor. These include engineering improvements such as traffic signal upgrades, signage enhancements, turning movement modifications, access management, and pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure improvements. A center median barrier is recommended in two high-risk rural segments to mitigate crossover crashes. Near-term strategies include installing rumble strips, optimizing traffic signal timing, and potentially implementing automated speed enforcement cameras.
Additionally, the study proposes an off-street walk-bike path along the corridor, with alignment preferences on the west and east sides based on environmental and historical considerations.
The study recommendations align with the previously completed US 287 Bus Rapid Transit Feasibility Study (PDF), which details infrastructure and service improvements for regional bus service on US 287.
Study Area
The study area includes 24 miles of US 287 between the Boulder County-Larimer County line in the north and Midway Boulevard in Broomfield in the south, and includes both the unincorporated Boulder County portions of the highway, as well as the portions of the highway within Longmont, Erie, Lafayette, and Broomfield as shown in the US 287 Vision Zero Safety & Mobility Study Area map.

Background
The US 287 corridor experiences some of the highest numbers of serious injury and fatal traffic crashes out of any roadway in Boulder County. In response, and in partnership with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), City of Longmont, City of Lafayette, Town of Erie, City and County of Broomfield, and Commuting Solutions, Boulder County led the US 287 Vision Zero Safety & Mobility Study.
The study was a collaborative effort to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries, while addressing multimodal needs and opportunities along a 24-mile segment of the highway that will align with future enhanced transit service.
