Former Swim Coach Jon Beber Sentenced 42 Years to Life

Today, the Court imposed a lengthy state prison sentence for a former swim coach convicted of sexually abusing three teenagers on the team. The Court had the discretion to run the sentences concurrently or consecutively. Based on the facts and circumstances, the Court ran each sentence consecutive:

Count 1: 18 years-to-Life in state prison followed by 20 years-to-life parole Count 2: 18 years-to-Life in state prison followed by 20 years-to-life parole

Count 3: 6 years in state prison followed by 10 years-to-life of parole In total, the Court imposed a sentence of 42 years-to- life in DOC.

Jon Beber worked as a Swim Coach for the club team Boulder Swimming from 1997 through early 2002. He committed sex offenses against multiple underage swimmers on that elite swim team. When the allegations against him initially surfaced in 2002, the defendant quit the team and left Colorado.

Nearly 20 years later, one of the victims called the District Attorney’s Office to inquire about the statute of limitations. That phone call led to this prosecution. In 2022, after three (3) victims came forward, the District Attorney’s Office filed charges against the defendant for sexually abusing three (3) teenage swimmers. The case went to trial in April.

The jury found the defendant guilty on all counts, including two counts of Sexual Assault on a Child by One in a Position of Trust – Pattern of Abuse (F3) and one count of Sexual Assault on a Child by One in a Position of Trust (F4).

DA Michael Dougherty stated, “This lengthy prison sentence is the right outcome. As the judge noted, this type of case is every parent’s worst nightmare. Parents drop kids off for practice or school and hope that the adults in charge are not abusing their position of trust. This defendant did exactly that, for years. It is only because of the victims’ courage and perseverance that we were able to bring charges all these years later and secure justice for them and their families.”
