Emergency landing on Hwy 287

Small Cessna aircraft safely lands after mechanical issues

Boulder County, Colo. - Today at 3:07 p.m., a small single-engine Mooney aircraft, en route from Cheyenne, WY, to Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, experienced mechanical issues resulting in an emergency landing on Hwy 287, just north of Niwot Road, in the southbound lanes.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the 36-year-old male pilot successfully executed the emergency landing without any injuries to himself, the only person onboard, or on the ground. Sheriff’s office deputies, Emergency Services, Colorado State Patrol, Erie Police Department, members of Lafayette Fire Department, Mountain View Fire Rescue, Boulder Rural Fire Protection District, and Boulder Emergency Squad responded to the scene.

Following the landing, the aircraft was carefully pushed off the road, and the highway has since been reopened to traffic. However, emergency vehicles remain at the site as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initiates its investigation into the incident. The FAA will lead the investigation to determine the exact cause of the emergency landing.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office involvement is documented under case report: 24-01826.
