Recreating in Changing Weather Conditions

Boulder County, Colo. - Yes, it’s that time of year where we get to enjoy all four seasons in one day. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit (ESU) would like to remind everyone planning to recreate this weekend of the inclement weather coming to our area. Rain and snow showers are likely on Saturday and Sunday in the front range and snow is expected in the higher elevations and along the continental divide.

ESU wants everyone to enjoy the outdoors safely so we can give our Search and Rescue volunteers a break.

When recreating outdoors, don’t forget your 10 essentials:

  • Appropriate footwear, including micro spikes for ice
  • Map and compass and/or a GPS
  • Extra water or a way to purify water
  • Extra food
  • Rain gear and extra clothing: dress in layers
  • Safety items: fire, light, whistle, shelter, emergency beacon
  • First aid kit
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Multi tool
  • Pack to carry items

It’s also a good idea to tell someone where you plan to go, your expected route, and when you plan to be back as well. All that information can help search and rescue teams should the unexpected happen and you run into trouble.

BE PREPARED SO YOU’RE NOT OUR NEXT MISSION.

But if you do find yourself in need of help, we want to remind everyone that there is no charge for rescue in the state of Colorado.
