Conclusion of death investigation in the 3900 block of Ridge Road.
Boulder County, Colo. - Boulder County Sheriff’s Office detectives have completed their investigation into the shooting deaths of Timothy Crimmins and Robert Reid, who both lived on the property in the 3900 block of Ridge Road in unincorporated Boulder County, Colorado. Based on the evidence and investigation, the Sheriff’s Office has determined that Mr. Reid killed Mr. Crimmins before taking his own life.
On March 16, 2023, deputies were dispatched to the residence and asked to check on 61-year-old Timothy Crimmins, as his family had not heard from him for several days. After arriving, they discovered a body hidden under a tarp outside of the home. The body was identified as Mr. Crimmins. It was later confirmed Mr. Crimmins had died as the result of a gunshot wound.
After discovering the body of Mr. Crimmins, a deputy returned to his patrol car for additional equipment. The patrol car was parked away from the home and out of sight due to the topography of the area. The deputy saw that another vehicle had parked in the area after deputies had initially parked their vehicles and approached the house. The deputy requested backup, and after backup arrived, contact was made with the vehicle.
Deputies located the lone occupant, an adult male, in the vehicle. He had died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Based on the timing and circumstances, it was clear that the male shot himself after arriving at the location. It was later learned that this male was 52-year-old Robert Reid, the owner of the home. A significant number of recently purchased cleaning supplies were found in the vehicle. Additional items near the body of Mr. Crimmins indicated that Mr. Reid was likely preparing to dispose of the victim’s body and clean the crime scene.
Sheriff’s detectives obtained a search warrant for the home, conducted interviews with family, friends, and neighbors, reviewed physical and electronic evidence, as well as reviewed the historical calls for law enforcement service at the home. Sheriff’s detectives also spoke with the store personnel who sold the cleaning supplies to Mr. Reid. He was alone at the time. The analysis of ballistics evidence revealed that the Mr. Crimmins’ wounds were consistent with a shotgun and ammunition owned by Mr. Reid.
Deputies had responded to eleven (11) calls for service since January 1, 2023, at the request of either Mr. Crimmins or Mr. Reid. Mr. Reid was Mr. Crimmins’ landlord, and both lived in separate structures on the property. The two had lengthy, ongoing disputes regarding rent payments, possible evictions, and payments for work completed on the home.
Based on the totality of the evidence and a thorough investigation, detectives determined Mr. Reid shot and killed Mr. Crimmins. On March 16, 2023, Mr. Reid left the home to obtain cleaning supplies and when he returned, he discovered sheriff’s deputies were at the home, and took his own life. Detectives did not locate any evidence suggesting additional people were involved in the murder. Autopsies were completed by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office and the cause and manner of the two deaths was consistent with evidence found by detectives.
The facts of the murder investigation were presented to members of the District Attorney’s Office in order to determine whether additional investigation is required in regard to events on and around March 16, 2023. The District Attorney’s Office agreed with the conclusion of the Sheriff’s Office; it appears that Mr. Reid acted alone in carrying out this tragic murder. Similarly, it was concluded that Mr. Reid acted alone in his attempts to dispose of the body and clean the crime scene. There is no indication that others were involved in this murder-suicide.
