Evening at the Museum: I Am Not a Savage: Lakota Performers in Europe

Description

In the latter 19th and early 20th century, U.S. government policy was aimed at eliminating the Lakota Indian culture. The concept was “kill the Indian, save the man.” Wild West shows like that of Buffalo Bill offered an alternative way, where the Lakotas could show off and preserve their culture, demonstrating that it was valid and they were not “savages.” This presentation will examine that culture, the lives of those who performed, and the impacts of their performances.
