Who We Are

We are currently not accepting Restorative Justice volunteer applications

“Our mission is to provide alternative responses to crime and conflict that encourage healing, accountability, competency and citizen involvement.”

Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Restorative Justice (BCSO RJ) program offers restorative justice to those affected by crime. Our process recognizes that crime is a violation of people and relationships, not just a violation of law. We receive referrals from our deputies, detectives and animal control officers, and seek to include those affected by crime in the decision-making process following a crime: victims, offenders, loved ones, supporters, community members, and law enforcement officials.

  • Victims of crime are given the opportunity to address the person(s) who have harmed them, to ask questions in a safe environment, and to share ideas on ways that the harm can be repaired.
  • Offenders better understand the impact of their actions, are held accountable, and encouraged to make amends to those they have harmed.
  • The community has a voice and offers support for the process, strengthening community connections and engaging in matters of concern to its members.
  • Referring law enforcement officials provide this opportunity for offenders who are willing willing to take responsibility for their actions, as well as opportunities for strengthening relationships within their community.

BCSO RJ was founded in 2000 and has offered restorative justice in hundreds of cases in Boulder County. The organization is driven by a team of highly trained and skilled volunteer facilitators and is guided by a civilian coordinator in the Sheriff’s Office.
