NEW Online Concealed Handgun Permit Process

Effective March 4, 2022

All NEW and RENEWAL Concealed Handgun Permit applications, REPLACEMENT card requests, and ADDRESS/NAME CHANGE requests must be completed online through the Permitium portal.

Mailed or emailed forms will no longer be processed. See below for details.

The below items are required to process your Concealed Handgun Permit application (or other request) through Permitium:

  • A valid personal email address
  • Colorado Driver’s License or Identification card
  • Debit/Credit Card

Visit Permitium to start the application process (or other request). This usually takes less than ten minutes to complete.

Concealed Handgun Permit Process

To apply for a new Concealed Handgun Permit, the following is required:

  • Colorado Driver’s License or Identification Card
  • Proof of handgun training that is less than 10 years old via one of the following situations:
    • In-person training certificate (taught by a certified instructor)
    • DD214
    • Current Firearms Instructor credentials
    • Current participation in shooting competitions
    • Current military ID card
  • Concealed Handgun Permit Application (filled out via Permitium portal)
  • Fingerprints/Photo (scheduled via Permitium portal)
  • Payment (paid via Permitium portal)

Once you have all your documents ready, please begin the application process through the Permitium portal. (Your appointment for fingerprints/photo will be scheduled through this portal.)

Your fingerprints and photo will take place at:

Arrive at the appointment with your valid Colorado Driver’s License or Identification Card.

After the fingerprint/photo appointment, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office will complete your background check. If there are no prohibiting circumstances, your permit will be mailed to the address you provided on your application within 90 days (or less) from the date your fingerprints were submitted.

The cost of a new CHP application is $152.50 (plus credit card fees).

To renew your Concealed Handgun Permit, you must apply with the Sheriff’s agency in the jurisdiction where you live (even if the permit was issued by another agency within the State of Colorado).*

You may renew up to 120 days (4 months) prior to your permit’s expiration.

No additional training is required for a renewal (but is recommended).

Make sure you have your Colorado Driver’s License or Identification Card and credit/debit card handy, then begin the Renewal application process through the Permitium portal.

After applicable background checks are made, and if you continue to qualify for a Concealed Handgun Permit, your new permit will be mailed to you at the address you provided on your application in approximately four weeks.

The cost of a Renewal CHP application is $63.00 (plus credit card fees) if the permit is current. The cost of a late renewal CHP is $78.00 ($63.00 plus a $15.00 late fee, as required by State Law) for up to six months expired. A permit that is more than six months expired is not renewable per State Law.

*Out of state permits are NOT eligible for renewal. If you would like a Concealed Handgun Permit in the State of Colorado, you must begin with a new application, following all requirements.

You are required by State Law to notify the agency that issued your permit of a change of address within 30 days of moving.

Changes of address within the State of Colorado:

Whether you are staying in Boulder County or moving to another county within the State of Colorado, you must provide a Change of Address Form to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. (If your permit was issued by another county, you must change your address with that county agency.)

The Change of Address Form is accessed and completed through the Permitium portal.

  • The form does not need to be notarized.
  • There is no charge for an address change.
  • No new card will be issued.

Changes of address outside the State of Colorado:

If you move out-of-state, you must provide a Change of Address Form to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. (If your permit was issued by another county, you must change your address with that county agency.)

The Change of Address Form is accessed and completed through the Permitium portal.

  • The Form does not need to be notarized.
  • There is no charge for an address change.
  • Your permit will be invalid once you become a resident of another state by obtaining that state’s driver’s license.
  • You must return your permit to:

If your name has changed, you must fill out and provide to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office the Name Change form and a copy of the court documents showing a legal name change.

The Name Change Form is accessed and completed through the Permitium portal.

  • The Name Change Form must be notarized
  • You will be required to upload the court documents to the Permitium portal
  • A new CHP card will be issued

You are required by State Law to report your card as Lost or Stolen to the agency that issued your permit within 30 days of loss.

You can also request a replacement card for a damaged or destroyed card (or for any other reason, such as weight change, new photo, etc.) by filling out the appropriate form.

The Lost/Stolen/Damaged Permit Replacement Form is accessed and completed through the Permitium portal.

  • When requesting a replacement card (for any reason), the form must be notarized.
  • An appointment is required for the notarization of a replacement card request. This appointment is made through the Permitium portal.
  • The cost of a replacement card, per State Law, is $15.00 (plus credit card fees), paid through the Permitium portal.

The State of Colorado has reciprocity of Concealed Handgun Permits with many other states.

A Retired Law Enforcement Officer Qualification Shoot is available through the Longmont Police Department/Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Firing Range.

Please bring your firearm in a safety case. The range will provide ammunition and targets. Also bring any eye and ear protection you have (they have limited availability of these items to borrow).
