Marshall Fire investigation update
Boulder County, Colo. - The investigation into the cause and origin of the Marshall Fire, which started on Dec. 30, 2021, remains on-going, however, we wanted to update our community on the progress that has been made.
Most of our initial investigative work is nearing completion, such as evidence gathering, photos, interviews, reviewing videos and information from community tips, etc. The investigation is now pending the conclusions and reports from several experts and labs. Those results could take several weeks, or even months, to come in.
As was previously released, we are investigating any and all potential causes of the fire including coal mines in the area, power lines, human activity, etc. We are working diligently with our investigation partners to ensure the outcome of the investigation is thorough and accurate. Since the beginning of the investigation, we have utilized resources, support, and experts from around the nation. We appreciate the contributions and efforts of our federal, state, and local partners. With their help and continued involvement, we remain committed to determining the cause and origin of the fire that occurred on that day.
The 20th Judicial District Attorney has been engaged in the investigation since the beginning. Once the investigation is concluded, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office will work with the District Attorney to analyze whether or not any criminal charges are appropriate.
We know our community members want to know what happened and we are doing everything we can to make that happen. We will not be conducting media interviews or releasing more specific investigation details until the investigation is concluded. Once this lengthy and important investigation is completed, that information will be shared with our community members and the media.
