Boulder County recognized as international climate leader on CDP 2021 A List

County receives top score on climate action from environmental impact non-profit, CDP

Boulder County, CO —Boulder County has been recognized by CDP as one of 95 cities and counties across the globetaking bold leadership on environmental action and transparency. Boulder County scored an A, CDP's highest rating. Only 9.8% of cities and counties that were scored in 2021 received an A.

To score an A, a city or county must disclose publicly an emissions inventory, have set an emissions reduction target and a renewable energy target, and have a published climate action plan. It must also complete a climate risk and vulnerability assessment and have a climate adaptation plan to demonstrate how it will tackle climate hazards.

"Measuring, understanding, and disclosing our environmental impact is a critical first step in designing policies and initiatives that take action on climate," said Susie Strife, Boulder County Director of Sustainability, Climate Action & Resilience. "We still need major systems change, but tracking and transparency allows Boulder County to manage climate risk and launch ambitious new initiatives, like carbon dioxide removal innovation, that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and drawdown carbon."

CDP’s Cities A List is based on environmental data disclosed by cities and counties to the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System.  For the first time, over 1,000 cities and counties are reporting their environmental impact through CDP in 2021. Meanwhile, 965 cities received a rating for their climate action from CDP in 2021, a substantial rise on the 591 cities scored in 2020.
