Boulder County, Colo. - On Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at approximately 6:35 a.m., the Boulder County Communications Center was notified of a scrambler who had injured her lower leg in the area of the Second Flatiron in Chautauqua Park, just west of Boulder.

The 26-year-old female had just finished scrambling the Freeway route on the Second Flatiron and was climbing around an obstacle at the top of the route before starting to descend back to the trail when she slipped and fell approximately 20 feet injuring her lower leg. As a result of the injury, she was unable to walk out to the trailhead.

A ranger from the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks was able to access the patient first and began providing first aid. Shortly after, additional rescuers from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group arrived and provided further medical care. The injured female’s leg was splinted, and she was placed into a full-body beanbag splint and a litter to be evacuated out to the trailhead. A technical evacuation was conducted by Rocky Mountain Rescue Group with assistance from rangers from the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks. The injured party was evaluated at the trailhead by paramedics from American Medical Response and transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further medical evaluation and care.

Agencies assisting with this rescue effort included: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, and American Medical Response.
