Program Summary: | Limber pine is an ecologically valuable species serving many functional roles in higher elevation ecosystems. Across its range limber pine is facing multiple threats including mountain pine beetle, white pine blister rust, and dwarf mistletoe. All these agents can cause widespread tree mortality and, when found in combination, can be even more lethal such that the long-term sustainability of the species is threatened. One strategy to aid in the recovery of the species is to get more limber pine on the landscape by outplanting seedlings or by direct seeding. Volunteers are needed to sow limber pine seeds on one of our mountain properties. This project involves a strenuous 1/2 mile uphill hike through snow drifts. The project location is at 9000′ in elevation and is subject to cancellation due to unpredictable spring weather. In case of cancellation, we plan on holding a limber pine seed clearing event at the Parks & Open Space building in Longmont. |
