Altona School Volunteer

The Altona School at Heil Valley Ranch, near Boulder.

Program Summary:

Volunteers will lead fun and educational programs at the recently restored Altona Schoolhouse at Heil Valley Ranch.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Volunteers will:

  • Present one room school programs to groups visiting the Altona School. Requested program group leaders may choose from an 1880s school experience, a World War II school experience, or learn about hard rock mining with an artifact trunk.
  • Share schoolhouse history, artifacts, and quick activities with drop-in visitors at Altona School Open Houses.
  • Set up and clean props and activity areas.
  • Research, develop, and lead period-appropriate crafts, games, and possibly songs.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Must be at least 14 years old (volunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian during training and volunteer shifts).
  • Minimum commitment of three programs and/or Open Houses per year.
  • Passionate about local history.
  • Comfortable speaking to a wide range of ages and audiences.
  • Computer, tablet, or a smart phone are required for scheduling and recording volunteer hours and for easier communication with staff and volunteer colleagues.
  • Must have personal transportation.
  • Pass criminal background check.
Training Dates and Information:

Attend a new volunteer training course (two sessions, approximately two hours each) in the Spring of 2025
