Part of the Boulder County Regional Bomb Squad
The Boulder County Hazardous Device Response Team – commonly referred to as the Boulder County Bomb Squad – is a specialized unit within the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. The team is responsible for responding to incidents involving actual or suspected explosive devices and hazardous materials. Their mission includes safely managing threats such as suspicious packages, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the disposal of illegal or confiscated fireworks and ammunition, and assisting with dignitary and special event protection details.
The Bomb Squad also provides tactical support to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and the Longmont Public Safety Department’s SWAT teams. This includes operations such as explosive breaching and the use of robots for surveillance, remote entry, and other unmanned tasks in potentially hazardous environments.
Operating as a nationally accredited, multi-agency unit under the Boulder County Regional Bomb Squad, the team is comprised of certified Hazardous Devices Technicians from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the Longmont Public Safety Department, and the Longmont Fire Department.
To maintain high safety standards and operational efficiency, the Bomb Squad uses a variety of specialized tools, including an Ammunition and Fireworks Burner. This equipment enables the team to safely and effectively destroy confiscated or hazardous explosive materials. The unit also remains committed to public safety through ongoing community outreach, education, and training efforts across Boulder County.
