Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Statement on Equity
Our country has long grappled with issues of equity and systemic racism. At the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, we recognize that law enforcement must do more to build trust and meaningful relationships with communities of color. There is no place in our organization for any deputy or employee who engages in biased behavior.
When you interact with our office, we want you to feel safe—regardless of your race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other status. If you speak with one of our deputies, you should never fear for your safety or experience discrimination.
We believe that true change requires collaboration between law enforcement and the community. One of our core values is: We value the person. We value the diversity among all individuals. We will treat everyone with courtesy, respect and dignity. We are constantly seeking better, more equitable ways to serve our community.
Our commitment is reflected in our policies and training programs. For example, we encourage you to review our “8 Can’t Wait” flyer. We also provide ongoing anti-bias training and have sent staff to participate in Courageous Conversations About Race training.
These are just a few of the steps we’re taking to ensure that every member of our community feels safe during interactions with our agency. Our work is ongoing—we view this not as a one-time initiative, but a continuous effort to increase awareness and hold ourselves accountable to the highest standards in how we serve the public.
We are examining our own policies and practices to identify and address structural racism. Structural racism refers to the ways in which public policies, institutional practices, and cultural norms can work together to perpetuate racial inequities. We are analyzing our data, practices, and policies, and will take action if disparities are found.
If you have feedback, concerns, or questions about how we are working to make Boulder County a safe and equitable place for everyone, we encourage you to reach out.
