Under law SB25-205, Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) are authorized to request serial number checks prior to purchasing firearms from private sellers. Local county sheriff’s offices or police departments are required to complete the serial number check and deliver the results within three days of the request. The FFL shall be informed if the firearm is reported as stolen, lost or involved in an open criminal investigation. If a licensee is located within city limits, they must request the serial number check from their local police department. If a licensee is in an unincorporated county, they must request a firearms serial number check from their local sheriff’s office.
This act also allows a licensee to perform the serial number check themselves if they have permission to access the federal government’s firearm tracing system. The licensee is subject to reporting requirements if the serial number search is done themself.
