Marriage/Civil Union Name Change

The Recording Division physical office is closed to the public. Online/phone services are available Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Limited in-person services are available by appointment.

Name Change after Marriage/Civil Union

A name change may be completed after the marriage or civil union license is recorded at the Recording Division.

If you live in Colorado, you will need to obtain a certified copy of your recorded marriage or civil union license to change your name. Some states will accept the original recorded license. Please check with your local office. Boulder County residents – please see Requesting Copies – Boulder County.

Your name must be changed with Social Security first, if applicable, then the Driver’s License office. If you have a passport to change, please visit Getting or Renewing a U.S. Passport | USAGov.

Social Security Card

Provide the following to change a name on a Social Security card:

  • Original marriage/civil union license
  • ID
