Latinx and Chicano History in Boulder County

Chicano and Latino culture have deep roots in Boulder County, shaping local traditions, community life, and civic engagement. This study explores that history, documenting experiences and contributions to better understand the role these communities have played in the county’s past and present.

Project Background

For generations, Latinx and Chicano families have shaped Boulder County — harvesting sugar beets, working the land, laboring in the mines, building neighborhoods, opening businesses, and raising families who call this place home.

Too often, these stories have been left out of the official record. This project seeks to honor, protect, and uplift Latinx and Chicano histories so that they are remembered, celebrated, and preserved for generations to come.

We are creating a Latinx & Chicano Historic Context Study for Boulder County. This study will document important sites, stories, and contributions, ensuring that our communities are represented in the cultural history of this region.

This project is a collaboration between Boulder County Community Planning & Permitting and Parks & Open Space and is partnering with Rooted Pathways Leadership, LLC.

Community History

Latinx and Chicano history is Boulder County history. By sharing your knowledge, stories, and memories, you are helping future generations understand:

  • Contributions of farmworkers, miners, and families to Boulder County’s growth
  • Struggles, celebrations, and everyday lives that shaped our communities
  • Importance of churches, neighborhoods, gathering places, and cultural traditions

Together, we can ensure these contributions are recognized, protected, and never forgotten.

Guiding Values

  • Anti-Racism & Equity – We acknowledge the harms and exclusions communities of color have faced and commit to doing this work with respect and accountability.
  • Community Care – We meet people where they are: at festivals, in familiar gathering places, and in conversation.
  • Safe Storykeeping – Stories are stored securely with project consultants, not government databases. You may choose to share anonymously.
  • Intergenerational Connection – We welcome elders, youth, and families, ensuring stories are carried forward.
