The month of June is designated for LGBTQ+ Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Riots that occurred at the end of June 1969. As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact LGBT people have had in the world. Pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer people to promote self-affirmation, dignity, equality and rights, increase visibility, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. The Boulder County Area Agency on Aging Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Plus program, in partnership with the Aging Services Foundation of Boulder County is sponsoring a donor drive through GIVE65, a program of Home Instead Senior Care Foundation, beginning in July. GIVE65 is a 65-hour, crowd-fundraising event for nonprofits serving older adults. The 2019 event is July 9-11, with prescheduling of donations occurring July 1-8. More details will follow through a letter that will be mailed and emailed to rainbow elders, past donors, in addition to friends and allies of the program. We are launching a pilot of our Rainbow Connections volunteer program to combat social isolation and create community for LGBTQ+ older adults in Boulder County during June to celebrate PRIDE month. Volunteers have been trained and are ready to be matched with recipients in need of phone and/or in-person connection from another LGBTQ+ or allied community member. We look forward to growing the program in the Fall, so if you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or if you are interested in being matched with a volunteer, please contact Michael Chifalo at mchifalo@bouldercounty.org.

Two events that the Boulder County Area Agency on Aging will be participating in are the 50+ Mixer and the Pride Festival. The 50+ LGBTQ+ Mixer is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the La Vita Bella Event Space at 471 Main Street in Longmont. Please join other 50+ LGBTQ+ individuals and allies for a mature evening celebrating Pride. As usual, we will also host a booth at the annual Pride Festival on Saturday, June 22 from 2-6 p.m. on 4th Avenue between Emery Street and Main Street. While it is not often talked about, an estimated 5 million older adults experience some sort of abuse, neglect or exploitation in the U.S. every year. As part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Boulder County Area Agency on Aging (AAA), area senior centers, and local agencies invite the community to attend a special event in Longmont on Thursday, June 13, to learn more about how to fight the problem, and to celebrate those who are making a difference for area residents. The event is an opportunity to raise awareness about elder abuse, and to hear professionals who work daily to respond to this problem. Presenters include: Chris Merkle, Longmont Police Department Detective; Adrian Van Nice, Boulder County Deputy District Attorney; Guio Bravo, Boulder County AAA Medicare Counselor and Frost Yarnell, Boulder County Adult Protective Services.

To honor the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, StoryCorps will ask people across the country to pick up their mobile devices and use the StoryCorps App to record the stories of people within the LGBTQ+ community who were born before the Stonewall Riots. Matt Bloom, Reporter for KUNC, 91.5 is looking to interview folks who lived in Colorado in the early 90s, around the time Amendment 2 was passed, for a radio feature around PRIDE looking at Colorado's journey from the "Hate State" to today. His desire is to tell the story of the legislative shifts that have occurred over the past two decades through first-person accounts.
